4.5/5
  • Intensity by Dean Koontz, takes place in the 1980s-1990s in Napa Valley California.
  • In this book, the two main characters are Chyna Shepherd(protagonist) and Edgler Vess(antagonist). Chyna is a 26 year-old college student. She has an abusive past and it constantly affects her. She is very inventive. Edgler Vess is a serial killer who kills depending on his mood.
  • Chyna and her best friend Laura decide to go home for the weekend. They stay at Laura's house in Napa Valley, California. One night, a serial killer (Edgler Vess) breaks into the house and goes on a killing rampage. He Murders Laura's family, but doesn't stop there. Throughout the story, Chyna tries to fight off the serial killer. Her ability to keep fighting scares the killer. When reading, you can tell Chyna is actually confronting her abusive past.
  • The main conflict in this book is external. Chyna has to hide from a murderer who is attacking her best friend. Although it may seem stereotypical, Chyna does argue with herself about whether she should keep fighting.
  • I believe that someone who likes thrillers would enjoy this novel. It's very intense and keeps you on the edge of your seat. This book definitely reminds me of the TV series, "Bates Motel". The genre of this book is Psychological Horror.
