Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
By J.K. Rowling, John Tiffany and Jack Thorne
5 stars*****
I give this book 5 stars because it was very interesting and kept you on the edge of your seat. The book added in many surprises that went along with the original story.
Setting: The novel takes place in all the old settings that the old Harry Potter books portrayed, but the children were most often at Hogwarts. Hogwarts is the magic school that Harry Potter went to. It has been rebuilt after the war, and now Harry's children are attending Hogwarts. The story also goes back in time to places where Voldemort appeared.
Main Characters: The three main characters are James Potter, Scorpius Malfoy and Delphini Diggory.
Albus Potter: Albus Potter is Harry Potter's middle child. He is very different from his family because he has never been great at magic and his grades at school are not great. He holds the family's fame on his shoulders. He often feels neglected and as if no one loves him. Albus and Harry get into a lot of disagreements throughout the book, so their relationship is not very good. People also make fun of Albus because he is the only Potter to be placed in Slytherin House.
Scorpius Malfoy: Scorpius is Draco Malfoy's only child. Scorpius has no friends and is bullied because people believe that he is actually Voldemort's son. He is depressed throughout the book because his mother is slowly dying, and he and his father do not have a good relationship. He meets Albus on their train ride to Hogwarts. They are both place into Slytherin, so they become best friends. Scorpius is very shy in the beginning of the book, but becomes adventurous and outgoing later in the book.
Delphini Diggory: Delphine is the niece of Amos Diggory. Her cousin was Cedric Diggory. Delphini takes care of Amos at the old folks home. She is adventurous and ends up helping Albus and Scorpius with their time traveling mission. She may be a appear to be a good friend, but she holds lots of secrets.
Main Plot Events:
In the beginning of the book, Albus is on the train to Hogwarts for his first year. He meets Scorpius on the train and they instantly become friends, just like Ron and Harry did many years ago. When they get to Hogwarts, the first years are sorted into their houses. Everyone expects the son of Harry potter to be in Gryffindor, but Albus is sorted into Slytherin with Scorpius.
At the end of Act 1, Scorpius, Delphini and Albus sneak into Hermione Granger's office to steal a Time Turner. After they have acquired the Time Turner, they sneak it onto the Hogwarts Express. Halfway to Hogwarts Albus and Scorpius travel to the top of the train and use the Time Turner. They travel back to the first task in the Triwizard Tournament to save Cedric Diggory.
Near the end of the book, Albus and Scorpius go back in time to save James and Lily Potter from being murdered in Godric's Hollow. When the two boys show up at Godric's Hollow, they find that their parents have beat them there. After a few hours, Voldemort shows up to kill Harry's parents. They try to stop him, but it fails.
Conflicts:
External Conflict:
Harry and Malfoy try to get along while their kids are in danger, but Malfoy tells Harry how he was always jealous of Harry's friendship with Ron and Hermione.
Harry and Albus get in fights because they disagree about everything. Harry is trying to help his son, but ends up making things worse.
People are always bullying Scorpius because they believe that he is Voldemort's son.
Internal Conflict:
Albus is frustrated because he feels that he cannot live up to his family's standards because he was put in Slytherin.
Recommendation:
I recommend this book to people who originally read the Harry Potter books. The book is great if you enjoy suspense and lots of surprising twists in the plot.
